Today, the technology that we have and what we call crowns is greatly improved upon what was in the past. In the past, most crowns were fabricated by a metal with porcelain bonded to it. Today we have what we call All-Porcelain Crowns. These crowns have no metal in them. The great thing about an all-porcelain crown, which is similar to an all-porcelain veneer, is the fact that there is translucency. So, when you smile, with your crown, the light passes through, which is the same type thing that happens with your real teeth, so they look very, very natural. The other drawback always was with the old metal crowns was that the fact that over time your gums would recede and you would get that dark and graying line around it. With today’s all-porcelain crowns, you will never see that dark line where the metal junction was and they are tremendous contribution to cosmetic dentistry.
