Tartar, bacteria, and food particles can often interfere with the whitening process. Therefore, the first step of your procedure will include thoroughly cleaning your teeth and gums.

Zoom!® results are dramatic because of the high concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the gel. While not harmful to your oral health, exposure to this bleaching agent can irritate your gums and surrounding tissue. Consequently, once your teeth are completely cleaned, we will place a plastic barrier over your gums to protect them, and so that the gel can focus solely on the teeth.

To optimize your results, we will expose your gel-coated teeth to a special light that activates the bleaching agent, removing extrinsic stains from the enamel. Patients usually leave the office within one hour, with noticeably whiter smiles.

Next, we will apply the whitening gel evenly over the surface of your teeth to ensure balanced and natural-looking whitening. The longer your teeth are exposed to the gel, the more dramatic your results will be.

Since you must keep your mouth open during the procedure, teeth whitening can be tiring. As a result, your session is usually broken out into fifteen-minute intervals. The gel is exposed to the light, then removed and re-applied after a short break. Patients usually leave the office within one hour, with noticeably whiter smiles.

Combining Home and Office Treatments

While an in-office Zoom!® treatment is highly effective, the results are not permanent. The severity of the stains, their depth, and your lifestyle all factor into how long the results will last. Whitened teeth typically begin to fade within one year of treatment.

In order to maintain brightness, we usually recommend at-home whitening gel applications to supplement the in-office treatment. Using customized whitening trays, you can apply the gel to your teeth several times throughout the year.

Depending on your needs, you can apply the at-home gel for a single-day of treatment, or several consecutive days every four to six months. We will help you determine the best schedule for maintaining your new whiter, brighter smile.
