How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are a long-term dental solution to replace missing teeth and prevent jawbone deterioration. However, they are not considered permanent in the sense that they will last a lifetime without any need for maintenance or replacement. Studies have found a 100% success rate of dental implants after 30 years of wear, making them a more permanent option compared to removable dentures or bridges.

Long Island CityNY, patients turn to Astoria Dental Group to get the most out of dental implant surgery and increase longevity thanks to our esteemed dentists’ commitment to greatness. Here, we answer the question, “how long do dental implants last?

What Factors Influence Longevity?

While studies point to a lifespan over 10 years for dental implants, the longevity of a dental implant can be influenced by a variety of factors, including:

  1. Implant Quality – The materials used for the implant itself and the manufacturing process can impact how well the implant integrates with the jawbone and withstands the forces of chewing. We use titanium implants at our office, which are biocompatible and considered by many dentists to be the gold-standard for implant materials.
  2. Surgical Expertise – Placing dental implants is a very individualized process. You want a surgeon with a history of success who’s highly qualified to place your dental implants in the proper location to support your restoration. Dr. Clifford Degel and Dr. Carmen Every-Degel have helped Astoria patients improve their smiles since 1991.
  3. Size of Implant – Studies have found that the length and diameter of an implant may play a role in the survival rate of dental implants. The study found that implants above 11.5 mm length, and with diameter less than 3.75 mm have a higher risk of failure.
  4. Implant Location – The same study found that implants placed in the mandibular posterior region, otherwise known as the lower, back teeth had higher failure rates from the participants studied. This may be caused by the increased pressure from chewing with these teeth. This is another reason why having a dentist who can properly place the implants in an ideal location is critical for long-term success.

How Long Do Restorations Last?

Implants create the foundation for your restorations (dental crown, bridge, or denture) to sit upon. While implants can often last 30 or more years, the same can’t be said for restorations. Similar to dental implants, the lifespan of a restoration can vary based on a variety of factors, but generally they last about 5-15 years.

How Long Do Mini Dental Implants Last?

We offer mini dental implants at our Long Island City dental office that can give patients a new, functioning smile in just one day. However, while research is limited on the longevity of mini dental implants, they do have a higher risk of failure. Mini dental implants are typically less than 3 mm in diameter, which may increase the risk of failure, as referenced above.
