How Long Does it Take to Get Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the best possible replacement for missing teeth. But many patients want the procedure to be complete as soon as possible. At Astoria Dental Group, serving Long Island City and Queens, we discuss how long it takes to get dental implants, and explore the possibility of same-day dental implants and same-day restorations.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Same-Day Dental Implants?

Same-day dental implants typically refer to immediate load implants, meaning that the restoration is placed the same day as dental implant surgery. That being said, there are some patients that wonder if they can have a dental implant placed the same day as a tooth extraction. As long as the patient is in good dental health, has good bone density in the area, and is a non-smoker, dental implants can often be placed the same day as tooth extraction.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Same-Day Restorations?

Same-day dental implant restorations, also known as immediate loading or same-day teeth, can be a suitable option for patients who meet certain criteria. Some factors that may make someone a good candidate for same-day dental implant restorations include having good overall and oral health, sufficient bone density, healthy gums, a stable bite, not smoking, and being willing to maintain a good oral hygiene routine.

In addition, patients should have realistic expectations of the results of the initial restoration that is placed. In most cases, same day teeth are temporary. The final, custom restoration is typically placed three to six months after dental implant surgery. The final restoration will look more natural and fit within your mouth more securely and comfortably since you have completely healed from surgery.

What Is the Dental Implant Treatment Timeline?

The dental implant treatment timeline begins with a full exam with a dentist. During this time, we can determine if you are a good candidate for immediate placement of dental implants and same day teeth. If you have poor jawbone density, you may need to have a bone graft before you can undergo dental implant surgery. If you have gum disease, you may need to undergo appropriate treatment for that condition before you can proceed with dental implant treatment. In addition, any other oral health problems such as cavities and root canal infections will need to be addressed before you can move forward with this treatment process.

Once your mouth is healthy, the dental implants can be placed. If your dentist has determined that a same day restoration can be secured to the implants, the temporary crown, bridge, or denture will be placed the same day as surgery.

Over the course of the next three to six months, the dental implants will fuse with the surrounding jawbone, ligaments, and gum tissues. Then, an abutment can be attached to the dental implants; this piece of hardware connects the implant to the final restoration. After the abutments are placed, patients undergo a two-week healing period.

Once this healing process is complete, the final custom restoration can be placed, completing the dental implant process.
