Treatment for Misshaped or Twisted Incisors
Our front teeth are so prominent that even minor flaws can seem exaggerated. If you have small incisors or incisors that are slightly twisted, you might be particularly aware of how they affect the overall appearance of your smile. Dr. Clifford Degel and Dr. Carmen Every-Degel can help. They have helped numerous people in Queens, NY have healthier smile that look great thanks to restorative procedures and state-of-the-art cosmetic dentistry treatments.
The team at Astoria Dental Group would like to consider how porcelain veneers, dental crowns, Invisalign®, and traditional orthodontics can be used to fix crooked or poorly shaped incisors.
Problems Caused by Twisted Incisors
If your incisors are twisted, this can lead to a few problems that affect the aesthetics of your smile as well as your dental health.
On the aesthetic side of things, twisted incisors can leave you feeling bad about the appearance of your smile. This can make you self-conscious around others, and can even impact your professional life if your job involves lots of public interaction.
In terms of dental health, twisted or misshaped incisors could cause pain or discomfort while biting and chewing. They can also lead to teeth grinding because your mouth cannot find a comfortable resting position. Over time, this can lead to tooth damage and a TMJ disorder.
Porcelain Veneers
For minor issues with misshapen or crooked incisors, porcelain veneers may be worth considering. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of dental ceramic that are designed to fit over the front portions of the teeth. When in place, a porcelain veneer masks imperfections from view and makes the tooth appear perfectly straight and properly shaped.
Dental Crowns
When porcelain veneers are not a good option for twisted or misshaped incisors, tooth-colored dental crowns may be considered. Crowns are caps that fit over a prepped tooth, improving its shape and protecting the underlying tooth structure as well. With a tooth-colored dental crown over twisted incisors, they will appear properly shaped and aligned.
Invisalign
When incisors are too twisted for cosmetic or restorative procedures, that’s when orthodontic care may be recommended. Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic options at our Queens practice. Rather than brackets and wires like traditional braces, Invisalign uses clear, removable aligner trays. Patients wear the trays at all times except when eating, drinking, or cleaning their teeth. A new tray is worn every two weeks to improve the alignment of the smile.
Orthodontic Care
Sometimes Invisalign isn’t enough to address the orthodontic care needs of a patient. In these cases, traditional orthodontic procedures would be most ideal. Using braces and possible even more advanced techniques, we can adjust the alignment of the incisors so that they look great and are no longer twisted or poorly positioned.
