Treatments for a Twisted Tooth

A single twisted tooth can lead to a number of aesthetic issues and general wellness issues. Thankfully the team at our Queens cosmetic dentistry center is able to address such matters, using the latest techniques in dental care.

Let’s take a moment to consider why a twisted tooth should be taken seriously and what treatment options are available.

Problems Caused by a Twisted Tooth

In terms of the aesthetics of your smile, a twisted tooth can lead you to feel self-conscious about smiling, laughing, and speaking, even around people you’ve known for years. This is especially true when the twisted tooth is one of your front teeth or more prominent teeth.

In terms of your dental health, a twisted tooth can make ti difficult to eat certain kinds of foods. Simply biting and chewing can lead to pain and discomfort. Over time, a single twisted tooth can even lead to your other teeth coming out of alignment, in addition to other issues with dental health.

Different Causes of Twisted Teeth

While twisted teeth are often associated with genetics and family history, there are actually many different reasons why a single tooth may be twisted or poorly aligned. They are as follows:

  • Genetics and family history
  • Thumb sucking at an early age
  • Persistent use of a baby bottle
  • Improper loss of baby or adult teeth
  • Problems with dental restorations
  • The effects of advanced gum disease
  • Injuries to the mouth or jaw
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)

In addition to the treatments we’ll note below, various procedures may also be recommended to address the root cause of the problem when applicable. For instance, a mouth guard and additional therapies may be recommended to help bring teeth grinding under control and so forth.

Porcelain Veneers for Minor Misalignment

When a tooth is just slightly twisted and is only a cosmetic issue, a porcelain veneer may be the best option. A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of dental ceramic that is used to conceal the front of a tooth. When a porcelain veneer is in place, it conceals cosmetic flaws from view, leaving a tooth looking perfect and pristine.

Porcelain veneers are semi-translucent, meaning that light passes through them slightly much like your regular teeth. In natural light or artificial light, people will not be able to tell the difference between a veneer and your natural teeth.

Orthodontic Treatment for Serious Misalignment

When a twisted tooth is too crooked to be treated through cosmetic means alone, orthodontic care is the best way to address the problem. Using brackets, wires, carefully applied pressure, and other instruments, orthodontists are able to reposition a tooth and improve overall dental alignment and health in the process.

The exact treatment for a crooked tooth can vary depending on the nature of the problem, the severity of the crookedness, and age of the patient. This can all be discussed in greater detail during the consultation process.
