Porcelain Veneers: A Versatile Cosmetic Solution
Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin, ceramic shells that are bonded directly to the front of your teeth to mask chips, gaps, discoloration, and other aesthetic imperfections. If minor blemishes have made you feel self-conscious and less likely to smile and laugh, Dr. Clifford Degel and Dr. Carmen Every-Degel can provide you with these beautiful, natural-looking restorations at our Queens practice. In as little as two appointments, veneers can conceal cosmetic concerns and dramatically improve the appearance of your smile.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers offer a lifelike solution for patients whose teeth are compromised by misalignment, gaps, or surface imperfections like staining. These thin shells fit comfortably over the teeth to transform your smile without the need for extensive dental work. Our doctors use precise techniques and the finest materials to fabricate veneers so that they are virtually indistinguishable from your surrounding teeth.
The versatility of these restorations means they can conceal numerous issues, including:
- Small and worn teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Minor gaps
Veneers are often described as the thickness of an eggshell or contact lens.
What to Expect During the Procedure
During a consultation with Dr. Degel or Dr. Every-Degel, we will discuss your concerns and treatment goals, and determine whether veneers are the best solution for you. The process of receiving your veneers can be completed in as little as two visits to our office.
At your first appointment, we will prepare each treated tooth by buffing its surface and removing about half a millimeter of enamel. This will make room for the veneer and ensure a natural-looking, comfortable fit. At this time, we will also take impressions which will be sent to our dental lab. You will be provided with temporary restorations until your following appointment. Once the veneers have been fabricated, you will return to our office and the restorations will be bonded in place using a tooth-colored dental cement. Slight modifications may be made to ensure your bite is not affected in any way.
Maintaining Your Results
Once your veneers have been placed and you leave our office, they can be cared for just like your natural teeth. We recommend that you brush and floss twice daily and continue to visit us twice a year for yearly professional cleanings and exams. During these appointments, we can also check the integrity of the restorations.
Once they are bonded in place, veneers can be cared for just like your natural teeth.
Although veneers can last for years with proper care, you should take some precautions to avoid chipping the ceramic. Do not bite your nails, chew on pens, or eat ice. You should also refrain from opening packages with your teeth since this habit could fracture the veneers.
