Reproducing the strength and appearance of your natural teeth with an artificial restoration is not an easy task.
At Astoria Dental Group serving Queens, Long Island, and all of NYC, we are proud to use Prettau® Zirconia, a material which provides the most durable and lifelike replacements for missing teeth possible.
Ready to learn more about the strongest material in dentistry?
Like natural tooth enamel, Prettau Zirconia is translucent. This quality allows your zirconia restoration to mimic the appearance of natural teeth for an incredibly realistic look.
Zirconia is highly resistant to cracking, chipping, or staining. It is also non-porous, which makes it stronger and more durable than alternative materials such as porcelain.
Zirconia, "the latest technology," achieves excellent results...
Is zirconia really that strong?
What conditions can we treat with a Prettau Zirconia bridge?
The most common use for Prettau Zirconia is to craft an implant bridge in order to replace a full arch of teeth.
For patients with severely decayed or damaged teeth, our doctors may recommend dental implants and a Prettau bridge.
If you currently have a restoration which looks or feels unnatural, you may want to upgrade to a zirconia implant bridge.
Patients with a history of dental problems often feel embarrassed about their smiles. If you have missing or severely damaged teeth, you may avoid speaking, eating, or smiling in public.
A stunning Prettau restoration from Astoria Dental Group can eliminate these insecurities so you can feel confident about your smile. Our natural-looking zirconia restorations can allow you to take pride in your appearance which can lead to a better overall quality of life. We proudly serve Queens, Long Island, and all of NYC.
Wondering whether you are a candidate?
One of the key requirements for receiving dental implants is sufficient bone tissue. If you have experienced bone loss due to missing teeth, our team can restore your candidacy with a bone graft.
We typically recommend patients resolve any issues with their gum health before receiving implants or full-arch restorations. Healthy gums can help ensure the success of your zirconia bridge.
Since dental implants require surgery, it is important to be free from any health issues which could limit your ability to heal after the procedure, such as autoimmune concerns or uncontrolled diabetes.
What are Prettau bridges made of?
Each Bridge Is Crafted from Biocompatible Zirconium
There are many advantages to using Prettau® Zirconia over traditional porcelain. Zirconium has been used in the medical field to make durable artificial limbs for over a decade, and it has made its way into the field of dentistry through its use in the Prettau Zirconia Implant Bridge.
Many dentists support the use of zirconium in dental restorations because it is highly biocompatible, making it safe to use for you and your family. It is the superior choice among the ceramic materials that are used in dentistry today.
Let's take a closer look at a Prettau restoration...
We Can Craft Your Zirconia Restoration Right in the Office
At Astoria Dental Group, we have invested in computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. This device allows Dr. Degel and Dr. Every-Degel to craft beautiful restorations from Prettau Zirconia in our office. With our CAD/CAM system we can perform every aspect of your treatment, from implant placement to restoration with a beautiful Prettau crown, bridge, or denture, in our office.
Once you are cleared for a Prettau Zirconia restoration, our dentists will help you prepare for your procedure...
Preparing Your Smile for Treatment
Your preparation will depend on which type of zirconia restoration you are receiving.
If you are receiving dental implants with your crown, bridge, or denture, you may have to undergo bone grafting or a sinus lift prior to your procedure. These procedures are designed to address bone loss, giving your dental implants a healthy, stable foundation.
If dental implants are a part of your treatment plan, you will be advised to prepare for your upcoming surgery by:
- Quitting smoking, as smoking increases the risk of implant failure
- Fasting in the hours before your surgery if sedation is being used
- Securing a friend or loved one to drive you home after your dental implant surgery
If you're receiving dental implants, here's what you can expect on the day of your implant surgery...
Dr. Degel will administer local anesthesia along with your preferred method of sedation to help you feel comfortable and relaxed during your dental procedure.
Our highly trained dentist will then place the implant posts directly into your jawbone, using advanced planning to ensure maximum precision.
Dr. Degel will then suture your gums around the implant sites. You will be monitored briefly before being allowed to return home.
Thanks to our in-office lab, you can go home with a restoration in place immediately after surgery.
If you did not receive dental implants as part of your zirconia restoration, you can go home and start enjoying your new restoration on the same day of placement.
But if you chose to receive dental implants, you will need to closely follow our doctor's post-operative instructions. Immediately after implant surgery, you should:
- Stick to a soft foods diet for a few days
- Avoid extremely hot foods or drinks that can trigger bleeding at the implant site
- Plan to relax and avoid strenuous exercise until cleared by Dr. Degel
- Ease swelling or discomfort by applying ice to the outside of your cheek
- Take your prescription antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection
Wondering when you'll reach a full recovery? The timeline varies from patient to patient, but here's what to expect...
If you received dental implants, any post-surgical discomfort should subside. For non-implant restorations, sensitivity should subside.
You will attend follow-up appointments and closely follow your healing instructions. Your gums will gradually heal around the implant site.
Your dental implants will fuse with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration.
If you underwent a bone graft to better support your zirconia restoration, a full recovery can take as long as a year.
Although the full recovery can take several months, the results will be well worth the wait...

Is there anything you can do to protect your zirconia crowns, bridges, or dentures?
Tips for Keeping Your Restoration Looking & Feeling New
Our dentists offer Prettau Zirconia because it is highly aesthetic, extremely durable, and stain-resistant. With proper dental care and regular visits to our Queens dental practice (serving Long Island and all of NYC), your restoration can last for up to a decade, or twice as long as standard restorations.
To avoid accidental damage to your restoration, you should:
- Refrain from opening packages with your teeth
- Avoid biting your nails
- Ask your dentist about a mouthguard if you are prone to teeth grinding
- Wear a mouthguard if you play contact sports
Wondering how much this innovative material will cost?
Zirconia Is Typically More Expensive
Because Prettau Zirconia is one of the most advanced materials available to dentists, it is typically more expensive than other materials like acrylic or porcelain. But because it can last twice as long in some cases, choosing zirconia may actually save you time and money in the long run.
Choosing Zirconia Can Save You Money Long-Term
Certain factors will determine the final cost of your Prettau restoration...
If you need dental procedures like gum disease treatment to prepare your smile for your restoration, this care will increase the cost of treatment.
If you chose to secure your restoration with dental implants, the cost of surgery and sedation dentistry will increase the final cost of your treatment.
Although there are more inexpensive materials available, Prettau Zirconia is the optimal choice if you want the most aesthetic, long-lasting results.
