A Popular Alternative to Traditional Veneers
In addition to traditional porcelain veneers, Drs. Clifford Degel and Carmen Every-Degel offer LUMINEERS®, a form of minimal-prep veneers. Lumineers are a popular choice at our Queens, NY, practice because they can conceal a variety of aesthetic concerns without extensive preparation of the tooth. If you are trying to decide between traditional veneers and Lumineers, our doctors can walk you through each option to see which is best suited to your goals and health needs.
The Lumineers Difference
Like traditional porcelain veneers, Lumineers are custom-made porcelain shells that cover the front-facing part of your teeth. However, Lumineers are much thinner than porcelain veneers. Because they are only about as thick as a contact lens, a significantly smaller amount of enamel is removed. As a result, they are an ideal solution for patients with sensitive teeth. This minimal tooth preparation technique also means that you can enjoy an expedited treatment time and typically experience less sensitivity after your treatment.
If you ever change your mind about Lumineers and choose to remove them, you will still have a fully functioning smile. In contrast, traditional veneers must be replaced to protect your teeth after the enamel has been removed.
Are Lumineers Right for You?
Although your unique case and overall goals will ultimately determine if Lumineers are right for you, they are typically a good choice for addressing cosmetic concerns such as:
- Chips or cracks
- Intrinsic stains that are not responsive to teeth whitening
- Minor orthodontic concerns such as small gaps or crossed teeth
- Disproportionately shaped or sized teeth
During your consultation, our doctors can explain the differences between Lumineers and porcelain veneers to help you make a decision.
Treatment from Start to Finish
To determine whether traditional veneers or Lumineers are right for you, our doctors will first review your cosmetic concerns. Because Lumineers are much thinner than traditional veneers, it is important to remember that they may not be appropriate for all cases such as deep, dark stains or larger gaps.
A Popular Option
“LUMINEERS are the most patient-requested veneers, can improve your confidence, and are a great option for patients who aren't ready to commit to porcelain veneers.”
Planning Your Treatment
If one of our doctors determine that you are a good candidate for treatment, we will begin by taking impressions of your smile. These digital impressions will be used to manufacture Lumineers that match the desired shape and color of your smile.
Because Lumineers do not respond to teeth whitening, we recommend that you undergo such treatment first so that your teeth are the shade you desire before receiving Lumineers. This will allow us to color-match your restorations to your newly-brightened smile.
Preparing Your Teeth
During the same appointment, we may need to prepare your teeth for the Lumineers. Depending on the size of your teeth, we may need to remove a small amount of enamel prior to placement. However, the amount is much more conservative than the amount taken when placing traditional veneers.
Placing Your Lumineers
Once your Lumineers are ready, you can return to our office. We will test the fit and feel of your minimal-prep veneer to ensure that it does not disrupt your bite or speech. If you are satisfied with the results, we will permanently attach the Lumineers with special dental cement.
