What Is a Sinus Lift?

The maxillary sinuses are air-filled cavities above the back portions of the upper jaw. They are approximately located where your molars and premolars are. If you want to get dental implants in that part of the jawbone, it's important that these sinus cavities be filled with a bone graft. This provides enough bone or bony material that the implants can anchor into without harming the sinus membranes.

A sinus lift is a procedure in which this empty part of the sinus is filled with donor bone or another type of bone graft. The procedure is also referred to as a sinus augmentation. Dr. Clifford Degel and Dr. Carmen Every-Degel can let you know if you need a sinus graft.

Sinus lift surgery creates bone mass and allows patients to receive implants along the upper jaw. Implant-supported restorations are an excellent restorative dentistry solution for different degrees of tooth loss.

Bone Graft Surgery
and Dental Implants

/

Grafting allows people to get dental implants after experiencing bone loss due to missing teeth. The sinus augmentation procedure specifically refers to the use of these materials when placing dental implants in the upper jaw. We can discuss other bone augmentation surgeries that can help with the implant process during your visit.

Who Should Undergo a Sinus Lift?

Implants for the Upper Jaw

If you are interested in getting implants for your upper dental arch, the sinus graft procedure will provide stability and protect the membranes of the maxillary sinuses from perforation.

Missing Molars and Premolars

You won't need a sinus lift if you're getting implants for upper teeth at the front of the dental arch. Sinus lift patients will have a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth at the back of their upper arch.

Good Overall Health

Patients should be in good enough health to undergo oral surgery without any risk to their general wellness. We can check for gum disease and review your medical history during your visit.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

Here's a general overview of the surgical procedure

Consultation

During your initial consultation at Astoria Dental Group in Queens, NY, we will examine the gaps left by your missing upper teeth and take X-rays to assess your oral health. We will listen to your concerns and goals and suggest different tooth replacement options that may be right for you.

Sedation and Anesthetic

Prior to the sinus lift procedure, local anesthetic is administered to prevent pain during surgery. We may use sedation dentistry techniques to help you achieve a calm and relaxed state.

Making Incisions

Incisions are made along the upper gum tissue to expose the underlying bone. Incisions are then made on the exposed bone in order to access the sinus.

Lifting the Sinus Membrane

The Schneiderian membrane is pushed upward to make room for the graft. Great care is taken not to perforate or damage the sinus membrane.

Placing the Grafts

Bone graft material is placed into the cavity. This ensures there is hard tissue where the sinus cavity used to be and holds the lifted Schneiderian membrane in place.

Completing Surgery

One the grafts are placed, the oral surgeon closes up the incisions. Sutures are used to seal incision sites along the gums.

Sinus Lift Recovery

After the sinus augmentation is completed patients will need a few days to recover. During this time, it's important to get ample rest, avoid tobacco products, and take any medications as directed.

Post-op Side Effects

Common surgical side effects after bone grafting include swelling, bleeding, and mild discomfort. If you experience any severe pain, excessive swelling, or heavy bleeding, be sure to contact our practice right away.

Follow-up Visits

In the weeks after surgery, there will be multiple return visits to Astoria Dental Group. This will allow us to monitor your recovery and note how the graft is merging with your natural bone structure. Attend all of these visits as scheduled.

Overall Healing Time

/

Before any implants can be placed, sinus lift patients must be fully healed and the bone grafts must be stable. This can take around six months, adding several months to the dental implant treatment timeline. We can discuss the full duration of implant dentistry treatment during your consultation.

Moving Forward
with Dental Implants

Once your sinuses have healed and the graft material has merged with the bone, we can move forward with the dental implant process. Once the implants are placed and have fused with your jaw, they'll be stable enough to support a dental prosthesis. We can use implants to anchor a dental crown, a dental bridge, or a denture in place.

In addition to the added treatment time, the sinus procedure can add to the overall cost of treatment. Drs. Clifford Degel and Carmen Every-Degel will be sure to discuss financing options and insurance coverage so you can get the treatment you need without going over your budget.

I've visited both Dr Every and Dr Degel and have had great experiences with both, with extensive work being done- extraction, implants, bridge, veneers, Invisalign, crowns, root canals and the basic cavities. The assistants are very helpful, staff is competent and friendly, the dental hygienist does a great job and I've never had to wait.
