Smiling senior couple after dental crowns treatment

Dental Crowns

A decayed or damaged tooth can affect the look of your smile and your ability to chew, leading to even more dental problems.

The dentists at Astoria Dental Group can restore your teeth using dental crowns we create in-office at our practice in Queens, NY.

Learn how Dr. Clifford Degel, Dr. Carmen Every-Degel, and the rest of our staff can save your smile.

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are a type of restoration that can treat extensive decay and damage while retaining much of your natural tooth. Dental crowns cover the remaining tooth structure to restore its shape and protect the tooth, often following other treatments such as a root canal. Our dentists will shape your tooth to create a tight seal for the crown, resulting in a long-lasting restoration that naturally blends in with your other teeth.

Your Choice of Crown Materials

With so many materials available for dental crowns, it can be difficult to know which is best suited to your needs. Your crown must be strong and durable enough to withstand pressure from biting and chewing. Consequently, the material of your crown can greatly impact its long-term success. That’s why Dr. Clifford Degel and Dr. Carmen Every-Degel are proud to offer zirconia and all-porcelain crowns at their Queens, NY, dental practice.

Porcelain

Crowns made of porcelain are an option that’s well-suited for your front row of teeth, offering a lifelike appearance that looks like a natural part of your smile.

Like porcelain veneers, all-porcelain crowns are translucent, which gives them a natural appearance.

Zirconia

Our dentists offer Prettau® zirconia crowns, a composite made of super-strong materials. Along with superior durability, zirconia crowns feature other benefits such as:

Natural Appearance

Zirconia has a white, translucent appearance like porcelain. A zirconia crown looks just like a natural tooth and can blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile.

Biocompatibility

Zirconia crowns are biocompatible, meaning they're unlikely to react with the body. For some people this can help reduce the risk of allergic reactions. Others simply prefer using biocompatible materials.

Non-Conductivity

Zirconia doesn’t conduct heat, which means it's more resistant to bacterial growth. As a result, a zirconia crown can help keep your mouth healthy.

Conservative Treatment

Because zirconia is so strong, zirconia crowns can be thinner than those made of other materials. This allows us to preserve more of your natural tooth.

Why Choose Us?

See the Results Beforehand

It can be hard to imagine what your new smile may look like after receiving dental crowns. That’s why we offer SmilePix technology, a system that generates a clear picture of how your smile will look after treatment. SmilePix allows you to make an informed choice between different dental procedures (e.g., dental bridges vs partial dentures) so we can provide the results you want.

Easing Dental Anxiety

We understand that despite its many benefits, dental work can sound intimidating. We’re proud to offer some of the latest sedation dentistry techniques to help anxious patients obtain the oral care they need while remaining comfortable. Patients can receive IV sedation under the care of a board-certified anesthesiologist. We also offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.

Consultation

Our dentists will recommend available treatments according to your unique needs, including the choice between zirconia and porcelain when crafting your crown.

Preparation

We numb your tooth and the surrounding area with local anesthetics before reshaping your tooth to fit the crown.

Modeling

Next, we scan your teeth with digital imaging technology to make an impression of your mouth. This accurate 3D model is used to design your custom crown.

Creation

We will supply you with a temporary crown to wear while our in-office lab crafts your permanent crown. This may take approximately 2-3 weeks.

Placement

Once your permanent crown is ready, we’ll remove the temporary crown and check the permanent crown for a good fit. Then we cement your crown in place for a strong, long-lasting seal.

Recovery

After treatment, your tooth may feel sensitive to hot or cold temperatures. This sensitivity should go away over time, and we recommend using toothpaste made for sensitive teeth until then. Adjusting to the feel of the crown may take a few days, but afterward, it should feel like a natural extension of your tooth.

Taking Care of a Temporary Crown

While our dentists create your permanent crown, you'll have to wear a temporary crown to protect the tooth. While taking care of a temporary crown is simple, patients may need to make a few adjustments to their daily habits such as:

  • Brushing more gently using a soft-bristled brush
  • Floss using in-and-out motions instead of up-and-down
  • Avoiding crunchy, chewy, sticky, hard, and sugary foods
  • Avoiding hot or cold foods and drinks (due to sensitivity)

If your temporary crown does fall off, call our office in Queens, NY. You can stick the temporary crown back on your tooth using dental adhesive until we can professionally attach it again.

Caring for Your Permanent Crown

Your dentist will give you comprehensive instructions on how to take care of your crown immediately after the procedure. For the most part, dental crowns require little to no extra care than a normal tooth. Patients just need to brush and floss regularly to maintain the crown and prevent other oral health issues like gum disease. That said, bad oral habits like chewing ice, biting your fingernails, or grinding your teeth have a high chance of cracking or chipping a dental crown.
