Porcelain Veneers vs Braces

There are several ways to achieve straighter, more beautiful teeth. The treatment that is right for you depends on a few different factors, including the complexity of your case, the severity of your misalignment, and your own oral health goals. At Astoria Dental Group, serving Queens, NY, Long Island, NY, and NYCwe use both porcelain veneers and orthodontics to produce a more attractive smile.

Here, Drs. Clifford Degel and Carmen Every-Degel explore porcelain veneers vs braces so patients can be informed about their treatment options. We can help you determine the most effective solution for your oral health needs.

Porcelain Veneers: “Instant Orthodontics”

Dental veneers are often referred to as instant orthodontics, and with good reason. These thin-but-strong ceramic shells adhere to the front tooth surfaces to conceal a variety of cosmetic issues, including misalignment. Veneers do not actually move the teeth into alignment, but they give the illusion of straighter teeth. Unlike braces, which take 18 to 24 months on average, porcelain veneers treatment usually only takes about two weeks.

Porcelain Veneers Treatment: A Brief Overview

To prepare the teeth for veneers, your dentist will remove small amounts of enamel. This helps the veneers bond to the teeth. Once this step is complete, impressions are taken and sent to our partner dental lab. There, a technician creates your custom veneers to blend in with your smile. During a second appointment, the veneers are permanently bonded into place.

Some patients qualify for LUMINEERS®, a minimal-prep alternative to traditional veneers. Our doctors can talk with you during a consultation to determine which option is right for you.

Pros and Cons of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers can transform your smile quickly. If you are looking to enhance your appearance within a matter of weeks, then veneers are an excellent choice.

Keep in mind, however, that veneers do not actually correct misalignment; they simply conceal it. In addition, veneers last approximately five to 15 years with proper care. They will likely need to be replaced at some point.

Orthodontics: Braces and Invisalign

Not everyone is eligible for “instant orthodontics” with porcelain veneers. If you have severe or complex misalignment, then you are probably better suited for orthodontic treatment. At Astoria Dental Group, we offer Invisalign®, an advanced orthodontic system that straightens your teeth using clear removable aligners. Invisalign can correct most of the same issues as traditional braces. However, in some cases, we may refer you to an orthodontist for a braces consultation.

Orthodontics Treatment: A Brief Overview

Braces and Invisalign treatment both take approximately 18 to 24 months to complete. With traditional braces, stainless steel brackets, bands, and wires are used to gently move the teeth over time. Invisalign uses a system of clear aligners to achieve the same goal. Patients who choose braces will need to visit their orthodontist monthly for tightenings. In most cases, Invisalign patients are only required to see their dentist every six weeks or so.

Pros and Cons of Braces

Unlike porcelain veneers, braces permanently move the teeth into their desirable locations. As a result, patients can enjoy a lifetime of optimal oral health.

As aforementioned, orthodontic treatment takes an average of 18 to 14 months to complete. Individuals who do not want to wait that long may prefer veneers instead.
