Are You a Good Candidate for Invisalign®? By Dr. Degel on February 27, 2011

Chances are, you don’t have a perfectly straight, perfectly even, perfectly symmetrical smile. Well, you are not alone. Most people in the world are in the same boat. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it. The team at our Long Island cosmetic dentistry office would like to share a little information with you right now about what Invisalign® involves and who are the best candidates for Invisalign®.

The Invisalign® system is an alternative to traditional braces that use brackets and wires. Patients are given these custom-made aligning trays, which are mouthpieces that help with the gradual straightening of the teeth. These mouthpieces are made of a clear and durable plastic, which means it is virtually undetectable and it is hard to warp or damage with normal use. The Invisalign® mouthpiece is worn at all times except when you are eating and sleeping.

After two weeks with the first treay, a new Invisalign® aligning mouthpiece is provided by the dentist and worn by the patient. Each successive Invisalign® tray will help gradually shift your teeth into ideal position. While Invisalign® treatment will take about as long as wearing traditional braces, it’s a preferred option for many people.

So who is a good candidate for Long Island Invisalign®? Good candidates for Invisalign® will have good dental health and teeth that are crooked or crowded. Ideal candidates will also be in their late teens and older. If you have issues with an underbite or overbite, Invisalign® will not be able to address that, and hence a different treatment will be recommended. Similarly, if your teeth are severely crooked or misaligned, it may be better to treat these matters with traditional braces.

If you would like to find out if Invisalign® is right for you, or if you would like to learn more about other treatments for optimal dental health, please contact our Astoria cosmetic dentistry office today.
