Foods that Naturally Cleanse the Teeth

Dr. Degel Feb 9, 2011

You probably know by now that sure way to improve the overall health and appearance of your teeth is to brush at least twice a day and to floss regularly. Simple and straightforward. What you probably are not aware of is that there are foods out there that can naturally clean, scrub, and help remove developing plaque from your teeth.

The best thing is these foods are generally good for you and easy to get at the grocery store. In a commitment to your continued dental health and enhancing your dental care, our Manhattan cosmetic dentist and the team at the office want to list a few of those foods for you right here.

Apples

An apple a day can keep the doctor away, and it can also keep some of that harmful plaque off your teeth as well. As with many of the other crunchy fruits and vegetables listed below, the fiber in these foods when combined with your saliva will help remove particles of food on your teeth.

Pears

Just like apples, you can count on pears to help keep the tooth decay away.

Carrots, Cumbers, Broccoli, and Cauliflower

These crunchy vegetables are not just great for your health, they can also help remove food particles from your mouth and hence reduce the formation of plaque.

Strawberries

Yes, strawberries can help cleanse your teeth. There are some who suggest that strawberries also have some bleaching properties, so rubbing strawberries on your teeth can help remove some minor dental stains. Be sure to clean your teeth thoroughly, though, since the subtle acids in this fruit can harm your tooth if left on too long.

Lemon Juice

Yes, lemons also have some dental bleaching properties like strawberries. Though not as effective as professional Manhattan teeth whitening, they can both be quite effective. Be sure, again, not to overexpose your teeth to citric acid, as that can harm tooth enamel.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Here’s another substance that can help bleach and whiten teeth. Since it’s certainly not a fun or pleasant idea to drink straight apple cider vinegar, brushing your teeth with a little apple cider vinegar diluted with water and baking soda can be helpful.
