Sedation Dentistry

Pain-Free Dentistry: Embracing Sedation for a Stress-Free Experience

Would you rather stay at home with a terrible toothache than brave a visit to the dentist?

If dental phobia is causing you to put off necessary dental procedures, consider how sedation dentistry can help.

At Astoria Dental Group in Queens, NY, Drs. Clifford Degel and Carmen Every-Degel can provide stress-free treatment for nervous patients.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a means of helping anxious patients relax in the dentist’s chair using certain medications. This dentistry solution is often used during dental procedures such as wisdom tooth extraction, dental implant placement, root canal therapy, or other complex treatments and surgeries. Patients who have difficulty controlling their movements due to conditions such as Parkinson’s or cerebral palsy may also benefit from sedation dentistry. It is important to understand that although sedation dentistry is often referred to as sleep dentistry, you will remain conscious during treatment. Sedation dentistry and medications only help induce a state of relaxation, and will not put you to sleep.

Who Can Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?

Many types of patients at our Queens, NY, practice can benefit from dental sedation. Those who may want to consider sedation include patients who have:

A Low Pain Threshold

Though most dental procedures create very little pain thanks to local anesthesia, sedatives can help put you at ease if you have a low tolerance for dental discomfort.

An Extensive Dental Treatment

Sedation can help patients comfortably get through lengthy dental work if extensive treatment is needed or multiple procedures are being performed in one sitting.

Dental Phobia or Anxiety

If you have an intense fear of dentistry or get nervous when you’re sitting in the exam chair, sedation can help calm your nerves before and during treatment.

A Sensitive Gag Reflex

Having dental tools in your mouth can be difficult and trigger your gag reflex. Sedation can make it easier to go through treatment by inducing a state of relaxation.

Difficulty Remaining Still

Sedation dentistry can help patients who find it difficult to remain still for long periods of time, such as patients with arthritis or Parkinson’s disease.

Who Can Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?

Our dentistry practice is committed to providing optimal dental care for all patients living in Astoria and throughout Queens, Long Island, and all of New York City. To avoid any possible complications, be sure to disclose potential issues to your dentist before your procedure.

Sedation dentistry may be helpful if you have:

Dental phobia

A sensitive gag reflex

Conditions that may affect your candidacy include:

Our Options for Sedation

monarch-floral 1 (1)

We provide oral conscious sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation. After reviewing your medical history, your dentist will determine if you are an appropriate candidate for sedation. Your dentist will discuss the pros and cons of each sedation technique, so you and your dentist can determine the best option for your needs and ensure that you feel confident about your decision.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is administered in pill form. Depending on the medication and dosage, oral sedation can have minimal or moderate effects. Your dentist will typically direct you to take the pill about an hour before the procedure. Oral sedation will make you feel drowsy and relaxed but allow you to remain responsive throughout the entire treatment. The effects of oral conscious sedation can last for a few hours, which means if you choose this option you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is often recommended to patients who have severe anxiety or sensitivity. Our dentists partner with a board-certified anesthesiologist, who will administer treatment to ensure your IV sedative is provided safely and effectively. IV sedation is administered directly into your bloodstream via a needle inserted into a vein in the back of your hand or in your arm. You should begin to feel the effects of the sedative within seconds. Fasting and other preparation may be suggested by your dentist before your procedure. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment, and you may feel drowsy for several hours afterward.

Cost of Sedation Dentistry

We believe everyone should have access to solutions that allow them to get the treatment they need. During your initial consultation, one of our dentists will be able to provide you with an estimate of how sedation will factor into the cost of your treatment plan. Sedation dentistry is not always covered by insurance. To help make sedation affordable to those who need it, we’re proud to offer financing plans to help cover the cost of sedation. CareCredit®, Wells Fargo, and LendingClub® are third-party financing options we offer to make the cost of treatment more manageable. These financing options allow you to pay off the cost of your treatment in convenient monthly installments.
