Treating an Overbite with Invisalign®

An overbite refers to a condition in which the upper front teeth overlap the bottom front teeth. Although some amount of overbite is not uncommon, a significant overbite can lead to oral health issues, like jaw pain, uneven enamel wear, or aesthetic problems. At Astoria Dental Group, many of our patients have enjoyed successful and discreet treatment for an overbite with Invisalign® clear aligners.

If an overbite is causing you to feel insecure about your smile, Invisalign® may be right for you. Contact Queens, NY dentists Clifford Degel or Carmen Every-Degel to learn more about your treatment options.

The Causes of Overbites

Overbites are commonly caused by genetics and are most likely to occur in those who have a family history of overbites. Overbites caused by genetics are most often associated with an underdeveloped lower jaw, which causes the upper jaw to protrude forward in relation to the lower jaw.

Overbites may also develop as a result of repeated habits. These habits include prolonged thumb sucking, pacifier use, or bottle use. These habits can cause the jaw to change shape or the teeth to move forward or become crooked.

Another habit that can create an overbite is a swallowing reflex disorder called tongue thrust. Tongue thrust is a condition in which the tongue pushes into the upper teeth instead of the palate of the mouth. This repeated pressure against the upper teeth can push them outward over time, potentially resulting in an overbite.

Invisalign® to Correct an Overbite

Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment that uses clear aligner trays to address many alignment issues, including mild to moderate overbites. Invisalign® treatment eliminates the need for metal braces through a series of transparent aligner trays. These trays are custom-made to gradually alter the position of the teeth, bringing them into proper alignment.

During Invisalign® treatment, a set of aligner trays are worn throughout the day and night. Trays may be removed while eating and for ease of brushing and flossing the teeth, but should be worn for a minimum of 22 hours a day.

Every two weeks, a new set of trays are worn until the overbite or other alignment issues are corrected. In most cases, this will take 12 months, but treatment times will vary based on the severity of alignment issues and how well patients adhere to their treatment plan.

The Benefits of Treating an Overbite with Invisalign®

Invisalign® provides many benefits in the treatment of an overbite. Some of these benefits include:

  • Comfortable: Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign® trays are smooth and won’t cut or irritate the inner lips or cheeks.
  • Removable: Invisalign® trays may be removed while eating, so no foods are off limits. They can also be removed for brushing and flossing the teeth, making it easy to maintain good oral hygiene while undergoing treatment.
  • Discreet: Clear Invisalign® trays mean no one will be able to tell that you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.
  • Improved alignment and aesthetics: Invisalign® is an effective treatment for improving alignment issues and enhancing the appearance of the smile.
